On October 13, 2024, a Haidong Gumdo experience program was held at Seodaejeon Plaza, Daejeon, to introduce Korean traditional culture to international participants. Organized as part of the Korean Government Scholarship Program (KGSP) for Overseas Railway Staffs, the event targeted global railway professionals from 13 countries studying at Woosong University. Under the leadership of Master Han Sang-hyun, the program provided an immersive introduction to Haidong Gumdo, showcasing Korea’s rich cultural heritage. Attendees included notable figures such as Kim Yeon-su, External Cooperation Officer of the Daejeon Sports Association, who highlighted the historical significance of Daejeon as a railway hub and welcomed the trainees’ active participation in cultural exchange.

The event featured impressive demonstrations by Haidong Gumdo grandmasters and performers, including bamboo cutting, sword dances, and apple slicing. Participants were equipped with safety swords and guided through basic techniques before attempting practical exercises like paper slicing and apple cutting. Outstanding performers were rewarded with Haidong Gumdo books and T-shirts, while Master Han personally signed the safety swords, turning them into treasured souvenirs. The program also catered to the participants’ diverse dietary needs with halal-friendly lunch boxes, ensuring inclusivity for trainees from countries such as Egypt, Indonesia, and Kazakhstan.

Closing the event, Oh No-kyun, President of the International Martial Arts Olympiad, and Yang Kyung-ho, representative of the Daejeon Jung-gu Archery Association, previewed upcoming cultural experiences, including Taekwondo and traditional Korean archery. The Haidong Gumdo program left participants deeply impressed, fostering cultural appreciation and camaraderie. This memorable event underscored the value of cultural exchange and created lasting connections between Korea and its international guests.
