As part of their on-site learning activities, international trainees of the Korean Government Scholarship Program (KGSP) for Overseas Government Railway Staffs visited the construction site of Section 1 of the Chuncheon–Sokcho Railway in Gangwon Province.

This large-scale infrastructure project is a key part of Korea’s plan to improve transportation connectivity in the eastern region. During the visit, trainees received an in-depth briefing on the overall construction plan, environmental considerations, and cutting-edge technologies being applied at the site.

One of the highlights of the visit was the introduction to the Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) method being used in the project. Site engineers explained how TBMs are utilized for efficient and precise tunnel excavation, especially in mountainous terrain like Gangwon-do. The trainees learned about the machine’s structure, operation process, and its advantages in reducing environmental impact and ensuring safety compared to conventional blasting techniques.

The field tour included a close-up view of tunnel excavation sites, bridge piers, and other key structures under development. Through real-time demonstrations and Q&A sessions with engineers, trainees gained valuable insight into Korea’s advanced railway construction techniques and project management strategies.

“This was a rare opportunity to observe TBM technology in action,” said one of the trainees. “The experience greatly deepened our understanding of modern tunnel construction methods.”

Organized by Woosong University and supported by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport and the Korea Railway Association, the visit allowed trainees to connect theoretical knowledge with real-world engineering practices, preparing them to become future leaders in railway development worldwide.
