Exploring Korea’s Northern Railway Line and Its Strategic Significance

On May 7–8, 2025, trainees from the KGSP Global Railway Training Program at Woosong University conducted a field trip to the Gangneung–Jejin railway construction site (Section 4) to observe Korea’s major ongoing railway development projects. The visit was organized by Woosong University and the Korea National Railway as part of the program’s practical learning activities.

During the visit, the group toured several key construction areas along the Donghae Northern Line, including track laying, tunnel excavation, and bridge construction sites. Experts from the Korea National Railway (KR) provided detailed explanations on the project’s progress, engineering challenges, and applied construction technologies.

The participants also discussed the strategic importance of the Donghae Northern Line, which is expected to play a pivotal role in future inter-Korean railway connectivity. The visit offered an opportunity for trainees to engage directly with field engineers and gain insights into Korea’s cutting-edge construction management practices.

This field study not only enhanced the participants’ understanding of Korea’s advanced railway technology but also deepened their awareness of the importance of railways in national and regional development. It is expected that the experience will contribute to their ability to apply Korean expertise in overseas infrastructure development and planning in their home countries.
